China's textile and clothing exports fell 18% in the first quarter and improved in March

According to the statistics of the General Administration of customs, in the first quarter of this year, China's textile and clothing exports totaled 45.264 billion US dollars, down 17.7% year-on-year (15.9% year-on-year in RMB terms). Among them, the cumulative export of textiles reached US $22.694 billion, down 14.6% year-on-year (down 12.7% year-on-year in RMB terms); the cumulative export of clothing reached US $22.570 billion, down 20.6% year-on-year (down 18.9% year-on-year in RMB terms).
From the perspective of product categories, the export of the industry continues to show a trend of differentiation. According to the statistical caliber of the customs, the year-on-year decline in the export of textiles, including yarns, fabrics, home textiles, industrial products and other finished products, was 5.3 percentage points higher than that in the previous two months, and the decline in the export of downstream clothing products was 0.6 percentage points higher than that in the previous two months.
In March, China's textile and clothing exports reached US $15.43 billion, down 12.9% year-on-year (down 10.0% year-on-year in RMB terms). Among them, the export of textiles reached US $8.922 billion, down 4.9% year on year (down 1.7% year on year in RMB terms); the export of clothing reached US $6.508 billion, down 22.0% year on year (down 19.3% year on year in RMB terms).
Novel coronavirus pneumonia is also affected by the new crown pneumonia epidemic. The textile and garment export decline in China is even higher than that in 2009 after the financial crisis. According to statistics, in 2009, China's export of goods fell by 16.0% and that of textiles and clothing by 10.07%; in the first quarter of 2020, China's export of goods fell by 13.3% and that of textiles and clothing by 17.70%.
In 2020, the novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic continued to spread, global consumer demand declined, and the demand for alternative consumer goods was more significantly inhibited. Some customers in the US and European markets cancelled or postponed import orders for textiles and clothing, resulting in a drop in the export volume of textiles and clothing in one quarter of the year, which was higher than that of the export of the entire goods trade, of which clothing exports fell more than textile exports. In the structure of export products, the export scale of clothing is lower than that of textile for the first time.
According to the analysis of China textile international production capacity cooperative enterprise alliance, in the second quarter, affected by the global spread of the new crown epidemic, China's textile industry is facing severe challenges of "stabilizing foreign trade" and "stabilizing employment". The sudden cancellation or postponement of overseas orders brings high uncertainty to the operation of domestic textile enterprises which have resumed production, highlighting various practical problems in market demand, inventory, cash flow, etc. It needs the joint efforts of the government, enterprises and industry organizations to take various effective measures in time to win the "survival war" in the second quarter and enhance the industry's future development toughness.
