China further expands textile export to Sri Lanka

With the development of Sri Lanka's garment processing industry, textiles have gradually become the key commodities for export to Sri Lanka. Since 1998, the annual average value of China's textile exports to Sri Lanka has been about 120 million US dollars, of which the total value of China's textile exports to Sri Lanka in 2001 was 122 million US dollars, accounting for about 30% of the total trade between the two countries.

1、 Import and export of textiles in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's total export in 2000 was 5.5 billion US dollars, including 2.98 billion US dollars of clothing (including a small amount of Textiles), accounting for 54% of the total annual export; in 2001, the total export was 4.7 billion US dollars, including 2.4 billion US dollars of clothing, accounting for 51% of the total annual export.

Sri Lanka's annual fabric demand is about 800 million meters, most of which is used for the production of export clothing, but Sri Lanka's textile production capacity can only meet less than 10% of the consumption of export clothing. In 2000, Sri Lanka's total import volume was 7.3 billion US dollars, and the textile import alone reached 1.47 billion US dollars, accounting for 20% of the total import volume; in 2001, Sri Lanka's total import volume was 5.4 billion US dollars, of which the textile import volume was close to 1.5 billion US dollars, accounting for 27% of the total import volume.

The largest importers and regions of the largest textile industry are Hongkong, Taiwan, India and Chinese mainland. In addition, the annual total consumption of cotton in Sri Lanka is about 55 million kg, of which 25% is produced locally and 75% is imported.

2、 The main types of textiles I export to Sri Lanka

The main textile products exported to Sri Lanka in 2000 are: cotton woven fabric (42%), synthetic staple fiber and cotton blended woven fabric (14%), fabric containing 85% or more synthetic staple fiber (4%), linen and ramie woven fabric (3%), man-made staple fiber woven fabric (1%), wool woven fabric, cotton yarn, etc.

3、 Problems in China's textile export to Sri Lanka

Although textiles are the main commodities exported by China to Sri Lanka, they are not as good as Hong Kong and Taiwan in terms of quantity and variety. It is understood that the advantage of China's textile exports to Sri Lanka is the relatively low price. Sri Lanka's complaints about China's textile exports are: the delivery is not punctual, the quality is unstable, the packaging is not good, the claim is not timely and the language communication is difficult.

4、 Opinions on expanding China's textile export

In 2002, the government of Sri Lanka proposed to sign a free trade agreement with the United States and the European Union to protect the competitiveness of its clothing and textile exports to the United States and Europe after the quota was cancelled in 2005. China's textile enterprises should make good use of Sri Lanka's export channels to the United States and Europe, seize the opportunity to expand exports.

1. Actively expand the export of fabrics

There are more than 140 textile mills in Sri Lanka, but there are less than 10 enterprises with scale. The annual output of fabrics in Sri Lanka is about 180 million meters, which is far from meeting the needs of garment production. About 90% of the fabrics needed for garment export need to be imported. I should tap the potential, improve the variety and grade of fabric production, and expand the export of fabric.

2. Make full use of advantages and avoid disadvantages

China's textile industry has the advantage of large quantity and low price. Sri Lanka's clothing exports to the United States and Europe are mainly casual wear, and China's products are more in line with its fabric demand. Our enterprises should make use of their own advantages to expand exports.

3. Invest in local factories

Sri Lanka's clothing export is characterized by foreign brands. Long term processing cooperation has enabled Sri Lanka's garment processing industry to obtain a certain stable market in European and American countries and regions. For example, internationally famous daaidas, polo, London fog, tomy, etc. have set up factories here for production, and almost all of their products are exported. At present, most textile factories and garment factories in Sri Lanka are under construction, and some small factories are unable to produce because of lack of funds and holding orders and quotas in their hands. If our company can see the project, through the acquisition of plants and existing quotas and orders, we can inherit its original customer relationship and enter the European and American market.

4. Improve Bidding Ability

The uniform fabric is purchased through bidding. Due to the short time limit of bid opening, China often loses the opportunity due to many domestic procedures, slow bid filling, unqualified sample preparation and other reasons. Our company can look for some reliable and powerful local agents, and improve the efficiency of our bidding work, it is possible to win more bidding opportunities.

5. Building accessories factory

It is understood that there is no garment accessories factory in Sri Lanka at present, and all accessories for exported garments depend on imports. Our company can discuss the possibility of building auxiliary material factory with local enterprises.
